What time and a half means
Time and a half is 1.5 times your regular hourly rate. At $18 an hour, the overtime rate is $27. Six overtime hours add $162.
The federal rule applies to hours over 40 in a workweek. A workweek is a fixed period of 168 hours that your employer sets.
The regular rate
The Department of Labor says the regular rate includes all pay for employment except certain payments the law excludes. Some bonuses can raise it. If your pay is more than a flat hourly wage, check with your employer or the Department of Labor.
Double time is not required by federal law. Some states, such as California, require it in certain cases.
