The formula

Decimal hours equal minutes divided by 60. Twenty minutes is 20 divided by 60, which is 0.33. A shift of 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours.

Payroll systems multiply hours by a rate, so they need decimals. A time clock that shows 7:45 has to be converted before you multiply.
