California's overtime rules
California counts overtime by the day as well as by the week. The Labor Commissioner's office describes the rules this way.
| Hours | Pay |
|---|---|
| Over 8, up to 12, in a workday | 1.5x regular rate |
| Over 12 in a workday | 2x regular rate |
| First 8 hours on the 7th consecutive day of a workweek | 1.5x regular rate |
| Over 8 hours on the 7th consecutive day | 2x regular rate |
| Over 40 in a workweek | 1.5x regular rate |
How this calculator stacks them
It applies the daily rules first, then counts the remaining regular hours toward the weekly 40. The seventh day rule applies only when all seven days of the week are worked. The math is shown under the result.
It does not model alternative workweek schedules, union agreements, or meal and rest break premiums. Check those with your employer or the state.
