The formula

Raise percentage equals new pay minus old pay, divided by old pay, times 100. New pay equals old pay times one plus the percentage. At $20 an hour, a 5% raise is $21.

For a yearly figure, hourly pay is multiplied by hours per week and 52 weeks. Forty hours a week is 2,080 hours a year.

Before tax

Every number here is before tax. Your take-home increase is smaller. If you work overtime, a raise also lifts your overtime rate, because overtime is a multiple of your regular rate.
